Return to the table.
In the example, the drive link AB rotates at a uniform rate about point A. At point B, a slider engages link CF, which makes a complete revolution about point C, but at a varying angular rate. In application, a cutting tool was attached at point E, advancing slowly on the cutting stroke and retracting rapidly on the backstroke. The quick return yielded a significant improvement in machine productivity. [Ref 4]

Joseph Whitworth (1803 - 1887) was a British mechanical engineer and tool maker who was also responsible for establishing precision measurement and manufacturing standards. Yes, it's the same Whitworth who sent you scouring the countryside for Whitworth wrenches for your MG.
